Bowery Lighting District Loses Two More

The storied Bowery lighting district is badly hemorrhaging its talent. As of this week, two mainstays are no longer transacting in the neighborhood, and another two are preparing to exit. Ergo, it’s time to reassess the situation here below Delancey.

Exclusive Light never officially announced its impending closure at 168 Bowery, but the leasing banners hanging from the canopies these last couple months were evidence enough. The veteran continued to operate until an eviction notice arrived at their doorstep on May 2, ending a twenty-year tenure. We called to see if the store was simply relocating, but the line was disconnected. And the website hasn’t been updated in quite some time, either.  It will be missed, along with the old-school signage gracing the Kenmare facade.

Next up is Lumen Lighting at 151 Bowery.  Their last day in the historical lighting district was in early April.  Now the corner shop is vacant, as the operation has since moved to a new location in midtown – 225 East 58th Street.

Meanwhile, the nearby Bowery Interiors/Lite Elite and J & P Lighting are still hanging from a thread.  Both establishments have advertised a perpetual going-out-of-business fire sale for more than a year. Signs in the windows of both stores reveal as much. It’s only a matter of time before these threats are realized.
