Coming Soon: Family Recipe at 231 Eldridge Street

We have an update on the Japanese home cooking style restaurant at 231 Eldridge Street.

The new eatery is the brainchild of chef Akiko Thurnauer, who had previously worked for The Dumpling Diva, Marja Samsom (The Kitchen Club, Chibi’s and Chibitini) and also at Nobu.

The restaurant, christened Family Recipe, will offer exactly that — eclectic recipes from Thurnauer’s culinary childhood. Thurnauer fondly remembers her father traveling throughout Asia, Europe and the Middle East, bringing back exotic ingredients. Back home in Tokyo, he took her to both fine restaurants and street fairs, where she was exposed to high and low cuisine. Family Recipe’s concept honors her father, who passed away 10 years ago. The official website describes the food as “cooking from the heart,” along with a focus on local and seasonal food.

Word on the street is that the restaurant will be opening in July. When we last passed by the space, we saw an unique-looking curved wall/ceiling, along with booths and what looked like a possible sushi counter in progress.

Also, there has been no notice of a liquor license application, so neighbors are speculating as to whether or not this will be a BYOB style place. On the website however, there is a happy hour listed plus a drinks menu category, which says that more info will be coming soon.

If they do obtain a license, that would spell five liquor licenses on this one block (on just one side) of northern Eldridge Street. Wowza.

Next door is the nightclub Bob, which on many nights has lines stretching in front of what will be Family Recipe. Wonder how the friendly bouncers on the block are going to diplomatically handle that.
