Until a few weeks ago, 74 Orchard Street was a quiet wasteland. Sitting in despair. The former culinary occupant, South African joint Bunny Chow, ceased operations during the spring and the space gradually descended into a state of disrepair. While the chalkboards at the entrance remained marked with menu options and the signage still firmly in place, the windows clouded over and the site became an unkempt harbinger of dust. It’s a completely different story today, as we are now on the precipice of a new nightlife establishment here.
For the last couple months, doors have been open during daylight, exposing the interior remodeling. All in the name of a new “burger bar” called Interstate Food & Liquor. The walls were redone and stenciled with various symbols and assorted images; a large clock now hangs from the rear balcony. All the necessary paperwork is in place, the liquor license transfer having been approved by the SLA. Interstate Food & Liquor will offer a menu of American-style bar food (burgers, hot dogs, mac n cheese, etc.). For now, the watering hole will operate during lunch, dinner, and late-night. The website promises that brunch is also in the works. Let’s just hope that neon fixture is not part of the equation for 74 Orchard Street.
