“Style Wars 2” is Coming Soon

Style Wars is often credited as the “first hip-hop documentary,” directed and co-produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant.  Originally airing on PBS in 1983, this seminal film account chronicled the now-romanticized urban sub-culture of early-eighties Gotham vis-a-vis graffiti, bboying, and rapping.  Many underground artists of the day were included.  Overall takeaway message is the notion that graffiti is not a symbol of a city having lost control.  Rather that it’s part of the fabric of this town and cannot be removed.

As we speak, Public Art Films is raising money to restore the film for a re-release in updated HD format.  Obviously these ambitions come with a hefty price tag, especially since the original negative was reportedly damaged while languishing in storage.  Fundraising has been ongoing with roughly $60,000 collected thus far.  You can donate here. But that’s not the real news here.  Oh, no.  There is apparently a Style Wars 2 film in the works.

Style Wars 2 is not really so much a sequel, but a lighthearted parody spinoff.  While Henry Chalfant is listed in the credits and fully supports the endeavor, he is not producing as he did on the original.  Instead, Amos Angeles and Veli Silver are taking the helm.  Chalfant said the following about the new effort:

It is a completely original film that makes intelligent and extremely funny references to our nearly thirty-year-old film, but in contemporary situations.  They use clever dialog and audio quotes from Style Wars to establish the context.  In ironic, and often hilarious scenes, they engage various elements of the film’s narrative, such as the conflict with the authorities, the cross-out wars, and the emergence of graffiti in the art world, in surprising ways.

The film that Amos Angeles and Veli Silver are engaged in making is a refreshing departure [from hackneyed ideas on the subject].

And below is the official trailer, hot off the press. Rumored release date is sometime by the end of the year:
