Bowery Diner Neons Switched On

Mathieu Palombino’s Bowery Diner flipped the proverbial switch the other day. The new chain-mounted neon housing, installed at 241 Bowery back in August, is no longer dark. As of yesterday, the red lights are illuminated, no doubt a calculated move in gearing up for inauguration.

However, the as-yet-unopened 24-hour eatery, which still boasts a summer 2011 opening date, remains locked behind a plywood sidewalk shed. In the last couple weeks, the last-minute prep work has been all too obvious. Lots of hustling and bustling onsite with deliveries and whatnot. Looking behind the open door, we’ve had a glimpse at the glass facade, fully fitted with the obligatory branded leafing. Opening remains unclear, but definitely imminent.

Meanwhile, the official website continues to both disappoint and entertain with that picture of the subway car submerging.
