Strange Loop Gallery Opens at 27 Orchard

We’ll go out on a limb and just say it. The last thing Orchard Street needs right now is another gallery. Especially south of Delancey where seemingly every storefront is gradually being gobbled up. Next up, 27 Orchard.

The latest Lower East Side showroom to hit the strip is Strange Loop, a dynamic space which bears some resemblance to the Con Artist workshop on Norfolk Street. Run by designer Claire Fury and photographer Alesia Exum, the gallery-slash-boutique is an amalgamation of pop Americana and European kitsch. To differentiate themselves, the duo creates a “live” environment where at least one artist is always working and allows patrons to print any of the exhibition images onto random paraphernalia (i.e. tees, totes).

The first installation at 27 Orchard is of the punk nature, exhibiting black-and-white photos of CBGB from the late 1990s.

On another note, the arrival of Strange Loop and the subsequent removal of the Body Gear storefront canopy uncovered some relatively intact ghost signage.  That of hosiery wholesaler High Style Shirt Company.
