Lower East Side “Bike Friendly Business District” Takes Off

Numerous Lower East Side businesses are pooling their efforts to help reward customers who arrive on bicycles. Those pedaling to participating locations will receive discounts like 10 to 15 percent off purchase, or buy-one-get-one-free promotions.
According to Metro New York, Transportation Alternatives is behind the “Bike Friendly Business District,” a dedicated district which includes an assemblage of more than 100 local stores below 14th Street. For instance, the original Veselka location on Second Avenue is offering bikers a free granola bar.
Miller Nuttle, a bike advocate for Transportation Alternatives, said they hope to create more neighborhood bike-discount zones, where businesses have bike-safety information posted and ask the city for things like bike racks.
“The district was the next logical step for us, thinking about focusing on New York as a city of neighborhoods,” Nuttle said. And when the city’s promised bike-share program begins, they hope, tourists will snatch up discounts at the local spots, bringing the businesses a cash boost.
We won’t hold our breath for the promised bike-share program. Nevertheless, the official inauguration of the Bike Friendly Business District begins on September 22 with a bike tour of businesses involved in the initiative. Below is an abbreviated snapshot of shops partaking:
