Five years ago, Pinkberry dipped its proverbial toe in the pool that is Little Italy by opening an outpost at 41 Spring Street. It was part of a concerted corporate downtown push that also established a presence on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. At the time, some in the area predicted a possible standoff with Rice to Riches, but that never really happened.

Instead, its frozen foe Red Mango is now entering the historic neighborhood, a mere three blocks from the competition. And interestingly enough, the chain chose 203 Grand Street for its expansion, situated just a few doors east of the iconic Ferrara dessert parlor. Banners in the windows of promise an imminent opening, but no firm date given.

And here we thought the fro-yo wars had already jumped the shark.
