East Bowery Preservation Plan Gains Key Support

As architecture on the east side of the Bowery continues to reach toward the heavens, the skyline across the way remains a constant low-rise height. No more than eighty-five feet and with frontage mainly of masonry. And for one reason – the Special Little Italy District zoning designation. For years, however, the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors has fought tooth and nail to achieve the same status for the east side of the street under the name “East Bowery Preservation Plan.”
The ambitious “contextual zoning plan” to help retain the historical neighborhood character received some momentum with a recent endorsement from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Below is the letter addressed to Amanda Burden of City Council:
