Exactly one month ago, Lower East Side nightlife became the target of an interagency raid to inspect venues for possible violations. The surprise inspection fell under a Giuliani-era program, code-named Multi-Agency Response to Community Hotspots (MARCH), whereby city and state authorities (NYPD, SLA, DOH, DOB, etc.) collaborate to visit establishments with reported complaint history. Recoup Lounge was one of the nightspots targeted, and ultimately would not survive the ordeal.

Situated on the proverbial frontier at 210 Rivington Street, the unpopular Recoup Lounge reportedly received no violations that night. Barely two weeks later, however, the Department of Health returned on its own accord and shuttered the establishment for “operating without a permit.” Since then, the gates have been closed with the DOH sticker in full view. A phone call reveals that the number is no longer in service.

Meanwhile, many events previously scheduled for the venue are scrambling to find new locations.

What was your opinion of Recoup Lounge?
