100 Montaditos to Open at Former Earthmatters on Ludlow

100 Montaditos already has the distinction of replacing one downtown institution, that being the fabled Pizza Box on Bleecker Street. Now it’s adding another arrow to its quiver by moving into the former home of Earthmatters at 177 Ludlow Street. At least that’s the plan, according to the SLA agenda for May. The foreign fast food cerveceria is seeking full liquor in this notorious Hell Square resolution area.
Interior demolition on all floors of 177 Ludlow have been in full swing for months, with all the visual components accounted for. Scaffolding, busted-out windows, pulley systems, and workers ambling about the premises. This property is also owned by the notorious Samy Mahfar, known around these parts for his upscale conversion of 143 Ludlow, including alleged tenant harassment (Mahfar sits on the board of the Lower East Side BID). For awhile there, the word circulating on the block was that the Gap was moving into this storefront. We never did see hardcore proof, and 100 Montaditos seems to put that baby to sleep.
Meanwhile, the Huffington Post reported in 2011 that this Spanish-based chain has grand plans to open some 4,000 locations across the US within the next few years.
