Pizza Box on Bleecker Closing; Spanish Fast-Food on the Way

One of our favorite pizza parlors is finished. The beloved Pizza Box, which has been slinging slices at 176 Bleecker Street since 1957, is to permanently shutter. Apparently some Spanish fast-food chain has taken over the lease and plans to open sometime in July. According to DNAinfo, 100 Montaditos will offer a low-cost “Spanish culinary experience.” Its monthly rent is $19,500.
To be honest, we’ve been worried about Pizza Box for years. When Magic Shoes shuttered in the neighboring 178 Bleecker (est. 1861), Pizza Box persevered; when the wrecking ball arrived later in 2009, Pizza Box persevered; when Cafe Le Figaro was drawn and quartered, Pizza Box persevered. Now its number has been called … though no specific closing date just yet.
Sad. Go grab a slice and dine and the backyard.
