James Gandolfini and the White Rider would be proud

Take a break from the Banksy media over-saturation with Hanksy

With Banksy tearing through town this week for his outdoor gallery push, the wheatpaste pun-master is not to be forgotten. The street artist put up a number of pieces around the Lower East Side last night, including one that sorta lampoons the namesake inspiration. Our favorite, however, is “Gandalfini” which is a mashup of the late great Sopranos star James Gandolfini and the White Rider from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s located at the corner of Orchard and Grand Street. As Hanksy tells us, “one Bada Bing to rule them all.”

Another is around the corner at Hester and Ludlow, carrying with it some middle school double-entendre.

Eight Years After Extell, Still No Supermarket for Two Bridges

With One Manhattan Square an eyesore of the Lower East Side skyline for so long, it’s almost impossible to remember what came before. Almost. Indeed, it’s been eight years since Pathmark officially closed its doors, leaving the surrounding Two Bridges community bereft of an affordable supermarket. For much of the local population, a walk to […]

Live Music from the ‘Fiore Escape’ on Essex Street

Lower East Side resident, and COVID-19 survivor, Jill Fiore, continued the Fiore Escape concert concept with a second show on her Essex Street fire escape. Fiore spent this past Saturday evening performing from the second-floor fire escape of her walkup (above Delancey Car Service). It was the second such performance – behind the show on […]

Metro Acres Supermarket Finally Makes its Mark on Clinton Street

The transition is complete. More than a year into its tenancy at 175 Clinton Street, Metro Acres is now at home. In other words, store signage is finally in place, with nary a sign of Fine Fare. The changeover had been gradual since Metro took over, to say the least. First with repositioning (and upscaling) […]

Zazzy’s Pizza Soft Launches in the Old Home of Rosario’s

With Rosario’s Pizza now a proverbial footnote, its successor is now in play. Zazzy’s Pizza is now serving on Orchard Street, albeit in soft launch mode for the last couple weeks. For starters, the health-conscious pizzeria (there are plant-based vegan options) is open for dinner service, 5pm-10pm daily. The takeout window at 173 Orchard is […]

Of Arts and Oats: OATLY Over Little Italy

The long-shuttered Miss Paradis restaurant has been an eyesore of Little Italy since before the pandemic. This ill-fated eatery, which rose on a corner parking lot across from Old St. Patrick’s, closed its doors in 2018 after only a year in business (and four prior years of planning). Its gleaming rooftop apple did not live […]
