Helmut Lang is opening a store at 14 Prince St.

You may have seen the bills wheat-pasted across the neighborhood – Helmut Lang is opening a large store close to the Bowery.

Ever since Cowboy Shoe Repair fled in 2010, retail has been a tough sell at Prince and Bowery. The ensuing four years were a veritable retail draught, with numerous businesses trying and failing (Fresh Prince, Block Headwear, Bellaritta, Luscious NYC). There were some success stories (Supra, Miss Hoe), but it was really the arrival of Sandro and Maje in 2012 that put the block on the radar. Call it the “Soho Creep.”

Helmut Lang is joining this club, too. The upscale fashion brand will open its Lower East Side store sometime in the spring, evidenced by the store wrapping at 14 Prince. It’s opening in a location previously occupied by French handbag company Jamin Puech.
