This year, Epstein’s Bar celebrates a decade on the Lower East Side. It first opened at 82 Stanton Street in 2004, and was reportedly named for the Juan Epstein character in Welcome Back, Kotter.

So, now at ten, the owners have decided to expand upward. Two additional floors (and bars). According to public application materials, Epstein’s would like the second level dedicated to a “speakeasy” of sorts, and the third as a another party room. They’ll appear before Community Board 3 tonight to try for the alteration.

Epstein’s is the archetypal rowdy B&T bro bar. Sitting at the highly-visible corner of Stanton and Allen Streets, the hangout is perenially jammed. And in summertime … forget about it. Add a couple more levels, and this could spell an epic noise grenade for residents in the immediate vicinity.
