Co-owner of The Box, Richard Kimmel, already opened his newest venture. Though, you wouldn’t necessarily know it. In typical Kimmel fashion, the storefront toys with perceptions and appearances. The Box hides behind the veneer of Spanjer Signs; with Kitty’s Canteen at 9 Stanton, the guise is of a restaurant still under construction. Indeed, the security gates are drawn and DOB permits still attached. Only the front door is accessible.

Kitty’s Canteen has been operating since late March, well below the rapid pings of foodie radar. Almost undetectable. It offers a southern-style take on traditional Jewish soul food … and already has a celebrity endorsement from Snoop Dogg. For shizzle.
