An ambitious grassroots effort is currently underway to bring more street art to the Lower East Side. Spearheading the campaign is local skater and entrepreneur Billy Rohan, who hopes to sheath one hundred store security gates south of Houston Street (between Allen and Essex). The program is aptly called the “100 Gates Project.”
The real estate breakdown for art is 25 gates on Essex, Ludlow, Orchard, and Allen each. Roughly. Thus far, the first few businesses to receive the paint treatment are Stanley’s Pharmacy, Forgtmenot, The Juicery, and Homie’s Wonderland.
Rohan simultaneously seeks the blessing of the Lower East Side BID in hopes for additional funding.
