Vintage boutique Dear:Rivington operated in the ground floor of 95 Rivington Street for five years before departing the 1840-era townhouse back in June. Quite a tenure considering so many of its peers barely last two in the Hell Square environs. The business relocated to the gold coast of Great Jones Street to a store more befitting its tastes.
Now its former digs is changing formats to a gallery space.
A Paris-based gallery owner Christian Berst who specializes in Art Brut (“outsider art“) is hopping the Atlantic to convert 95 Rivington into a new showroom. Renovations began last week, signaled in no uncertain terms by the arrival of that familiar window paper. Berst claims that his showrooms are “the only Art Brut galleries in Paris and NYC.” This location – curated by Phillip March Jones – is slated to open October 30.
95 Rivington is among the last remnants of the First Roumanian-American Synagogue which collapsed in 2006.
