That nighttime cookout in the Allen Street Mall was part of a larger trend. A group of presumably destitute men and women has been camping out in the median since the early part of summer. At all hours of the day you can find evidence of the occupation, from dozers on the bench to piles of garbage.

Cops in the 7th Precinct are apparently aware of the situation here. Captain Simonetti noted at the last community meeting that he’s been sending regular patrols, which have already netted some arrests. Not all are homeless; apparently some live in nearby shelters and some receive treatment at area methadone clinics (there’s one near the F stop on Delancey).

Service organizations like the Bowery Residents’ Committee are pitching in to help alleviate the situation, and helping with shelter placements.
