Grand Street Water Main Work Crosses the Bowery, Inches Toward Essex Street

The Department of Design and Construction is ready for Phase II of its Grand Street capital works project (#MED609), which aims to install new trunk water mains between Broadway and Essex. For the last two years, most of the ear-splitting infrastructural work was relegated to Little Italy. But the front has just shifted eastward across the Bowery.
Portable fences and other equipment now line the curbs on the north side of Grand Street, outside the open-air fish markets. The teardown of roadway commences this week and will inch its way toward Essex Street. This includes nighttime activities, so keep those earplugs handy … for the next three years.
In addition to these new water mains, the DDC will also replace traffic signs, street lighting, reconstruct distribution water mains, clean the sewers, and repave a fresh roadway. The project is slated to last at least three years, with a target completion date of Spring 2017.
