Tonight, Sutra Lounge celebrates both its life and imminent death. As previously reported, the longtime First Avenue hang will hang its hat after a farewell party tonight with Questlove and Tony Touch on the turntables. The sendoff bash also functions as a tenth anniversary celebration.
Once owner Ariel Palitz and Sutra Lounge altogether sunset, the co-prinicpals of Mercury Bar and Tonic East in Murray Hill (Keith McKeon and Kevin Caulfield) will take control. They’re planning to open a “sports-themed” bar-restaurant with some 12 TVs. Community Board 3 approved the sale of assets last month, yet without the vote of Palitz, who sits on the SLA subcommittee.
Meanwhile, Palitz is still rumored to be a part of the new Mars Bar reboot project happening on East First Street.
