Seatless Benches Along Allen Street Mall are Missing Slats Due to Manufacturer Defect

When the city revamped the Allen Street Mall a couple years ago, residents welcomed the spiffy new street furniture. Late-night conversation sessions or mahjong games are a common sight around here. Not to mention homeless pitching camp for cookouts.
However, the equipment is proving fairly cheap and unreliable. Those curvy benches in the medians are crap. For more than a year, the wooden slats gradually disappeared to the point where you can no longer sit.
This time around, the guilt is not entirely with skateboarders, but the manufacturer. The Parks Department confirmed to Community Board 3 that there was a defect in the shipment of wood used for the bench slats. Apparently the pieces were so brittle that you could easily break with one hand. Replacement slats were reportedly reordered at no additional cost to the city.
Vocal locals have been pointing fingers at this issue of seatless benches for just as long. Looks like those efforts panned out.
