American Apparel Closes Its Bleecker Street Store

When American Apparel picked the Banana Republic store at 205 Bleecker Street, it certainly seemed a coup. Its high-profile arrival in February 2009 killed a formidable conquest that had been around in some form or another since 1985.
But now the youthy hipster hawkers are done with the space.
The store is completely empty, nary a furnishing in sight. Calls to the listed phone number reveal a disconnected line, and 205 Bleecker is no longer listed in the website’s “store locator.” With this retail loss, American Apparel now boasts five downtown locations, including a “factory outlet” on Lafayette Street.
Best guess on what comes next?
