Its dealings with dormancy have concluded. For now. The 800 square-foot restaurant in the base of the Ludlow Residence dormitory is being reborn as we speak. That taste of the Mediterranean here is changing to that of Italy.

Yup. Another pizza joint for Hell Square is rising at the 101 Ludlow Street compound, the two-year home of Hummus Shop. Champion Pizza, under construction these last few weeks, just installed its storefront awning and flag this weekend. It’s yet another late night pizza option for bar-goers.

In fact, Champion Pizza is the seventh such parlor within the loose confines of Hell Square. Yet more fodder for the short-lived campaign to end the “LES pizza takeover.” You remember – it was that petition making the rounds last February to end the proliferation of invasive dollar-joints, and help “promote diversity in low to mid-priced food options.”
