Spiritual America followed its Lower East Side address-mate Cutie Room into the dark oblivion, having closed up shop last week. Last month was its three-year anniversay at 5 Rivington Street; this month is a bit less celebratory. The women’s boutique shuttered without much announcement to the neighborhood. Its window leafing – somewhat scraped off – remains as reminder.
Spiritual America opened at 5 Rivington back in 2011. The brand takes its name from a controversial showcase here three decades ago. At the time, artist Richard Prince exhibited a piece called “Spiritual America,” a re-photographed image of a nude Brooke Shields at the age of 10. The alleged message (other than pedophilia) was “playing to conflicting impulses—the seeking of attention while maintaining a high moral ground.”
