The Essex Street Snowman Makes its First Appearance of 2015

The Essex Street Snowman made his grand return to the Lower East Side yesterday. Once again, employees of the Chinese bodega at the corner of Canal spent much of yesterday afternoon gathering and amassing the gargantuan creature (and spraying water to freeze it in place). By evening, he was ready, at an approximate height of seven feet and complete with clementines for buttons and apples for eyes (clever).
It’s the perfect promotional stunt for the convenience store, as pedestrians consistently pose and share.
This recurring snowman at 1 Essex Street has become an annual tradition after each storm. Its popularity began to flourish in the winter of 2010-2011 when photos of its presence went viral (the Boxing Day storm that year). The character often gets more rotund if mother nature sees fit to deliver the extra helping of white fluff.
