75 Years Later, the Essex Market Building at Broome Street is Coming Down

In less than two months, the Essex Street Market is to celebrate its 75th anniversary on the Lower East Side. So it’s worth noting that its long-vacant warehouse south of Delancey is currently being reduced to a pile of rubble. Essex Crossing and its 24-story Gateway tower are coming…
Demolition permits were actually filed almost a year ago, but only recently did the actual work commence. The scaffolding and netting arrived last week, with drilling and mechanical movements of the machinery becoming a constant drain on the senses. Anyway, much of the takedown is currently focused on the southern section of the premises (corner of Broome Street).

SPURA Site 2 is the kickoff for Essex Crossing, and will eventually sprout a glassy 24-story tower. As reported, plans for “The Gateway” include the relocated Essex Market, 14-screen Regal movie theater (1,250 seats), a 12,000 square-foot urban farm on the roof of the five-story podium, and 195 residential units (split 50-50 market rate, affordable). Expect construction to follow later this spring, and continue for at least three years.
