1897 – Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, the first Orthodox Rabbinical Seminary in America, received a New York State charter. This religious educational body – founded on the Lower East Side – was the precursor to what would eventually become Yeshiva University.
RIETS, as it’s informally known, introduced an all Jewish high school (the first of its kind in America) in 1916, and a college twelve years later.
Today in LES History is compiled by Lower East Side History Project, an award-winning non-profit organization which offers research, consulting and daily public and private walking tours. See the full schedule here: http://leshp.org.
