New York City-based collective The Rooks have got it. When we asked them on the spot, they liken their sound as “head-knocking-modern-pocket-soul.” Um, we can get with that!

The band—Garth Taylor (vocals), Nate Mondschein (drums/vocals), Spencer Hattendorf (sax/vocals/percussion), Graham Richman (guitar), Louis Russo (bass), and Gabe Gordon (keys)—have been crafting their infectious indie/R&B soul blend since coming together at Wesleyan University around 2009. With already a slew of self-released singles and an EP under their belts, they dropped their latest single, the killer “Intermission (Wires),” in January. Check out the radness via their Bandcamp page here.

Plus, they rocked a four-night run at Pianos in 2013, and their showcase was the venue’s second highest grossing residency in venue history. Just check ’em out below, ruling it on their own tune, “Nothing Wrong,” and The Beatles classic, “You Never Give Me Your Money.”

This Saturday (March 21), The Rooks will bring their good-time sonics to the Mercury Lounge stage. They hail the LES spot as one of their favorites.

“Oh man, Merc is just the perfect combination of an incredibly professional, well structured and well run venue that’s not afraid to get rowdy,” the band explains. “The last time we were there, we were remarkably well taken care of, but also had that really inspiring feeling through the whole show that the room could just completely explode at any second, and that the recipe for an incredibly enjoyable and exciting performance.”

Bowery Boogie is giving away a pair of tickets to Mercury Lounge show (doors are at 7:30 PM and the show is 21 and over). If you’re looking to get into the groove, hit Bowery Boogie up at the tipline with the subject line “The Rooks Contest.” A winner will be chosen at random on Friday (March 20) at 12pmEST.
