The northwest corner of the warehouse is all that remains of the Essex Street Market building on Site 2, south of Delancey. Its 75 years of history now resides in several piles of rubble scattered across the large development parcel, with a foundation visible.
Once cleaned up, the lot will sprout the flagship building in the Essex Crossing project – “The Gateway.” As previously disclosed, the new property is a glassy 24-story tower that will collectively house the relocated Essex Market, 14-screen Regal movie theater (1,250 seats), a 12,000 square-foot urban farm on the roof of the five-story podium, and 195 residential units (split 50-50 market rate, affordable). Expect construction to follow in short order, and continue for at least three years.
This one-story, Depression-era facility dates back to 1940, and was part of Mayor La Guardia’s policy to bring the pushcarts inside.
