Skal Icelandic Bar on Canal Street Closes Shop

Six months shy of its second anniversary, nordic nightspot Skal is seemingly finished. The restaurant has been closed for the better part of the last week, most notably during the peak weekend nights. In fact, the corner hang at 37 Canal Street maintained a rather staggered schedule of late.
Word on the street is that the Icelandic joint is down for the count, and won’t be reopening. This, shortly after receiving Michelin recommendation back in January.
Olibjorn Stephenson, proprietor behind popular wine bar Ten Belles, opened Skal at the corner of Ludlow and Canal Streets in August 2013. He had purchased the assets from the owner of Les Enfants Terribles (who’s opening a new spot nearby) a few months earlier.
No word just yet on a replacement, but that probably won’t be too far behind.
Skal is an icelandic exclamation that means “cheers,” and is pronounced “scowl.”
