WiFi connectivity is coming to three Lower East Side subway stations on the IND and BMT lines. Sooner than you think, too.
We are currently in phase 3 of the rollout, which includes connectivity to East Broadway, 2nd Avenue, and Delancey/Essex. A spokesperson for Transit Wireless – the contracted company to outfit the subway network – tells us that all three stops should go live in the next couple months (i.e. “this spring”).
Regarding the Delancey/Essex station, WiFi equipment is already installed in the stairwells. Now it’s just a matter of flipping the switch.
As previously reported, the embattled East Broadway station was initially part of phase 4 implementation for winter 2015. However, local politicians intervened earlier this year to fast-track the installation. Service is now available there as of this week.
