It’s Been 5 Years Since Cafe Colonial Shuttered

It was exactly five years ago that Cafe Colonial concluded its run at 73 East Houston Street. The longtime favorite – here at the corner of Mulberry for fifteen years – shuttered back on May 25, 2010 thanks to tripled rent. And what could afford that but flashy boutique chain Rag & Bone?
Rag & Bone ultimately replaced Cafe Colonial some nine months later, crowning its victory over the neighborhood with a tribute mural. From then on, the Elizabeth Street facade became a revolving canvas for street art (aka Houston/Project).
All that remains of Cafe Colonial is window leafing inside the store.
