Mama Spa on Allen is on its way out.

Just before its sixth anniversary on the Lower East Side, an oasis of calm is on the chopping block. The Mama Spa at 141 Allen Street is throwing in the towel, it seems. For the better part of the last year, a broker has been listing the 2,600 square-foot space on the market (i.e. Craigslist). And in that time, the price has yet to budge. To rent it, you’ll need $15,000 per month of pocket change.

Prior posts had listed $75,000 in key money, but that’s disappeared…

According to the post, the spa will be delivered as a “vanilla box,” industry parlance for any use. Even though the commercial unit was recently remodeled, $15,000 in rent seems pretty steep for a corner that doesn’t see loads of foot traffic.

Newcomer Yeah Man Spa pretty much has the monopoly on the block.

With an ever-constant flow of stories about landlords upscaling tenements – and the resultant displacement of residents – it’s appropriate to revisit the little-known federal program of “instant renovations” from yesteryear. This housing rehabilitation pilot program began during the mayoral term of Lindsay, and seems rather bonkers. Essentially, a crane would cut through the roof […]

Being an early riser and accustomed to walking my Furbabies at 5:00am daily, I was forced to carry a flashlight in order to see. My inquiries to […]

Issey Miyake Boutique will Eventually Open on Kenmare Street [Updated]

That so-called jewel box development at Elizabeth and Kenmare Streets is a sore site for these eyes. With the mess of construction materials long-gone, the hulking concrete mass feels somewhat like a prison complex. And into this condo compound, a trendy international retailer on the ground level. Eye-grabbing teaser signage for Issey Miyake has been […]
