Street artist GILF returned to the Lower East Side in the overnight hours to provide some illicit commentary to the iconic Germania Bank Building at 190 Bowery. For a brief period, the staircase was condoned off with her token “Gentrification in Progress” tape. Her goal with the exhibition is a discussion of the “rising rent rates which force small businesses out of the neighborhood.” And the targeted spot couldn’t have been more appropriate.
After all, 190 Bowery is amidst its so-called renaissance as a beacon for the upper crust. Real estate magnate Aby Rosen spent $55 million to acquire the property from photographer Jay Maisel and continues to shop it around; he hosts a public gallery show with Vito Schnabel, but decides at the last minute not to allow plebs on premise; condos could be a reality. The list will surely go on once more occupants move here.
