If perchance you walked by the corner of Bowery and East Houston Monday afternoon, this single-row display of construction paper likely served as greeting. Onlookers gathered earlier this week to watch as two girls snapped photos of people standing backward. Backward head shots, if you will.
Flanking the pages were visual explanations of the public project. It’s the type of poster you might encounter at a barber shop. A matrix of heads with varying hair styles.
Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof is behind the stunt – dubbed “Head” – which twice took up residence outside Cherche Midi. Her goal is to collect thousands of these images and assemble a website that catalogs the photos, and allows people from all over the world to upload. Kruithof tells us that the overall theme of the project is anonymity, but that it won’t be ready for a minute.
