Angelo Romano of ‘Rocky Slims’ is Eyeing the Barramundi Space at 67 Clinton Street

When Barramundi temporarily closed in February 2014 for a tune-up, the writing was on the wall. Something was wrong with the eleven-year-old establishment that needed to change. Then just a few months later, 67 Clinton Street was placed on the market for $7 million. All signs pointed to uncertainty. Nevertheless, we were assured by owner Tony Powe that the fish would continue to swim, so to speak.
No longer the case.
Chef Angelo Romano – fresh off opening Rocky Slims in Kip’s Bay – is looking to launch a bar here instead. Details are limited, but according to paperwork filed with Community Board 3, there will be twenty tables and two stand-up bars. No menu was provided with the application, but it doesn’t look like pizza. Proposed hours are 12pm-4am every day.
Meanwhile, no word whether Powe’s 2nd Floor on Clinton will continue to operate.
The first incarnation of Barramundi was actually at 145-147 Ludlow alongside Collective Unconscious. It closed in 2004, and the buildings were demolished for a vacant lot. That parcel is being developed as we speak, though. Barramundi moved to 67 Clinton Street in 2005.
