Sam’s Spring Roll Opens on Essex Street

Sam’s Spring Roll rocked the boat last December in its bid for the north store of 23 Essex Street. Nevertheless, it didn’t hinder the push to completion. In fact, the “bar” is now fully operational, having debuted last week, and already with the requisite Yelp shills.
The four-table establishment is billed as more of a “takeout restaurant,” and offers up bite-size spring rolls for a few dollars. But neighbors still fear another bait-and-switch with a previously unlicensed address.
The SPaCE Block Association resoundingly opposed the application six months ago during the pitch to Community Board 3. Limited outreach, small menu of select spring rolls, and purported unwillingness to talk with neighbors were all contributing factors. Not to mention this would be the third drinking establishment on the block. And even though the advisory committee denied the beer-wine license, principal Samantha Chu went straight to the State Liquor Authority (submitted in April). Even though it’s still pending, there should be little resistance at the state level.
