New Tree Guards Installed Along the Length of Orchard Street

More beautification for Orchard Street this week. Flatbed trucks were spotted delivering iron tree guards to the sidewalks of Orchard Street this week. Installation began on the northern terminus and is slowly headed southward.
The ornate guards now act as deterrent to tree-bound bike locks and dog droppings.
The landscape revitalization goes hand-in-hand with overall effort by the Lower East Side BID to establish a “safer more enjoyable environment” for residents, merchants, and commuters along the seven-block stretch of Orchard (Division is not included). What that means is a potential, yet controversial pedestrian plaza at Broome, the recent introduction of forty new trees, various seating, and additional “groves” that signify an entrance onto the street (four at each intersection).
