Today is the first Tuesday in August. As in the past, this means National Night Out Against Crime, an annual community awareness event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. This year’s outing transpires directly in the heart of Hell Square – Orchard and Stanton Streets. Seems like the perfect opportunity to address the crime and nightlife woes this area has experience in the last decade.

The 32nd iteration of National Night Out begins this evening at 4pm. This year’s theme is “Give Crime and Drugs a Going-Away Party.” Entertainment is provided – rides, food, beverages, raffles, etc.

As Clayton Patterson posited in a recent Villager editorial, this doesn’t seem to be the best location for a National Night Out event. Ideal spot would be an area with a high concentration of youngsters that can benefit. This choice seems odd.

Nevertheless, it’s a chance to meet the police officers and tell them you’re sick of the over-saturation on the Lower East Side.
