World Hats on Orchard St.

Orchard Street vendor veteran World Hats is on the move, forced from its longtime location in the historic Beckenstein’s building just north of Delancey. We hear word that the landlord, Velum LLC, reportedly jacked the rent, so the business had to take a hike. That trip won’t take them too far, however.

World Hats maintained side-by-side stores at 130 Orchard for more than a decade (i.e. World Fragrances). That tenure concludes at the end of this month. Beginning in mid-September – probably the 7th, according to a sign on site – headquarters will shift up the block to 138 Orchard, effectively downsizing the overall company footprint.

World Hats takes the reins from Les Jardins de la Duchesse. Of course, who could forget that disaster, right? This bakery probably set the record for quickest closure in recent memory. Open for barely two weeks in early December, the all-eclair bakery shuttered before anyone really knew it was there. One reader relayed at the time, “They opened up one day, and a few days later, I saw the girl who had been working the counter and handing out samples waiting outside the store flipping out because the owner had apparently stiffed her on pay.”

During the months-long hiatus, we had seen several real estate listings for the space at roughly $7,500 per month.

This is the Car Horn Every Pedestrian Needs [VIDEO]

In a world driven by technology, here’s a welcomed, albeit impractical, analog solution to a maddening pedestrian problem. We’ve all had to deal with it at one point or another. An indecisive three-wide, ambling past a restaurant. Sidewalk selfie snappers. Tourists in herd formation. iZombies. Children walking irrationally. There’s only so many times you can […]

Street hockey players in the city, but the Lower East Side especially, are now short-handed. The ever-reliable Tanahey Playground rink on Cherry Street is officially gone.
