Defective Benches in Allen Street Mall Receive Replacement Slats

Yes, the Parks Department came through on broken promises over busted benches. The curve-shaped seating dotting the lower medians of the Allen Street Mall – basically left for dead – was finally remedied last week after more than a year of prodding. Prodding from both vocal community members and local politicians.
The newer wood slats were installed, and are already serving their singular function; people are now sitting. Time will tell whether the replacement parts withstand the weight (and abuse).
We first exposed the problem of these iron benches around this time last year. Slats had been missing for quite awhile, and many blamed the skateboarders. But that wasn’t entirely true. Rather, it was the manufacturer. The Parks Department confirmed that there was a defect in the initial shipment of wood used. Apparently the pieces were so brittle that you could easily break with one hand. Replacements were promised on several occasions in the interim but didn’t actually happen until last week.
