The original Star Wars trilogy remains a personal obsession. Despite the creative meddlings of George Lucas, who butchered the legacy with revisionist history and a second trilogy of insufferable prequels. We devoured much of the literature on the fantasy world, including the Timothy Zahn Thrawn series from the early nineties. And one of the things that always stood out was the complexity of character names. Perhaps the future is just too complex for its own good.

So it came with great surprise to learn that J.J. Abrams – the Lost creator who’s currently directing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens reboot – tapped the Beastie Boys to name one of the peripheral characters. Since July, Star Wars fan sites have been poring over the conceptual art for an X-Wing fighter pilot named “Bullhead.” As it turns out, his real name is actually Ello Asty, confirmed with the appearance of a new figuring of same.

Yes, the first letter of Hello Nasty were dropped to name this alien. There’s more. The inscription on Ello’s helmet – written in the universe language of Aurebesh – translates to “Born to Ill.” Apparently, J.J. Abrams is a huge Beastie Boys fan.
