Mere hours after a cherry picker crane tipped, then crashed, into the sixth-floor window of 133 Essex Street, Department of Buildings dropped the hammer. The city agency issued a stop-work order Monday night due to a “failure to safeguard public and property.” No one was injured in the incident, but there were reportedly tenants in the affected apartment.
The collision was apparently caused by an “equipment malfunction,” which saw the hydraulic lift tip some eight inches for a couple hours before busting through the window. Contractor Jepol Construction Inc. isn’t blaming the operator.
The condo building suffered no structural damage, according to the Daily News, but FDNY officials ordered the two top-floor apartments evacuated. However, we don’t see an vacate orders on file with DOB. Nevertheless, the Fire Department is asked to inspect the structural stability of 133 Essex.
