This is the month of milling here on the Lower East Side. Several more local streets are going under the proverbial knife this week for repaving.
The following roads, among others, will be categorically scraped and grated into submission this week. Resurfacing will eventually follow, but never soon enough. Anticipated completion date is April 29. Watch your step and wear a mask; it’s dusty.
- Broome between Hudson Street and the Bowery.
- Allen Street between Hester and East Houston.
As before, the job is part of a $17.9 million overhaul (#HW2CR16B) that includes resurfacing work in the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx.
Sometimes this roadwork activity uncovers the layers of city history beneath our feet. For instance, the Belgian Blocks that remain embedded around the intersection of Orchard and Broome Streets. Almost completely intact.
