The Germania Bank Building is undergoing commercial conversion and its longstanding sheath of graffiti and street art is threatened. For the last several weeks, owner RFR Realty (Aby Rosen) has been testing erasure methods to potentially sanitize 190 Bowery. Power-washing and fancy removal panels.

This resulted in the desecration two weeks ago of the NEKST tag flanking the east facade. A leasing banner was subsequently placed above the lettering.

But apparently the NEKST faithful wasn’t having it. Someone spray-painted the “K” back into the name with gusto.

NEKST began writing in 1996 (as “Next”) and eventually ascended the ladder to become a heavyweight in the scene. He once stated in an interview that “my work has always been about scale and visibility.” The Houston-based street writer died back in December 2012.
