An impromptu Prince tribute appeared on Ludlow Street last night. The modest memorial – at the foot of the “Nothing Compares 2 U” mural by Adrian Wilson – was timed to coincide with the lyric of the Prince-penned track popularized by Sinead O’Connor.
The opening line is, “it’s been seven hours and thirteen days since you took your love away.” In this case, since Prince died on April 21. 6:07pm marked the exact time of elapse. (Sinead O’Connor had changed the lyric in her version to “fifteen days.”)
A purple banner affixed to the fence lays out the information, along with a Sharpie for passersby to leave memories.
Also at that exact moment, radio stations across the country simulcasted “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Rain came down, though not purple.
