The Classic Coffee Shop Reopens on Hester Street

The local diner classic is back.
The Classic Coffee Shop reopened yesterday after its week-long renovation period. The sign on 56 Hester Street alerting customers to its summer cleaning was definitely a scare. As was the cluttered space – in a state of total disarray – on Tuesday evening. After all, we’re all too familiar with renovation notices used as cover for restaurant owners bolting.
Luckily the closure was as advertised – temporary.
The Classic Coffee Shop has been serving out of 56 Hester Street for forty years already. It’s owned and operated by Lower East Sider Carmine Morales. In fact, the location is presumably one of the longest continually operated diners around here. Before his father inherited the business in 1976, it was also apparently a diner by one Benny Steinberg.
