Sunshine Cinema Pays Tribute to Gene Wilder; Plus, See ‘Willy Wonka’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’ on the Big Screen

Over at the Sunshine Cinema on East Houston Street, management just installed a small tribute to the genius of Gene Wilder.
The backlit marquee now reads, “Rest in Peace Gene Wilder.”
On a related note, Blazing Saddles and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory are headed back to theaters this weekend for a limited run. If you want to see the former, it’s only playing in Times Square at 7:30pm Saturday and Sunday; but you have three chances to catch Willy Wonka this holiday weekend, including the Metrograph on Monday (previously planned as part of “Roald Dahl Weekends” series before Wilder passed away).
Wilder, born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, died this past Monday due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 83. Tons of obituaries have already been penned about this tremendous loss. Take your pick. We’ll just post this clip…
