Cabalito Closing Shop after 2 Years on Essex Street; Factory Tamal Taking Over

Popular Salvadoran eatery, Cabalito Pupuseria, is calling it quits at the end of the week. News of its demise had been circulating two months ago, but didn’t come to pass until now. Last day in business is December 31.
Owner Randy Rodriguez – former barista at Cafe Grumpy next door – is closing Cabalito of his own volition. To “take a break,” as he noted in an email to us yesterday.
Rodriguez founded Cabalito in March 2015. It later became part of the cheap eats enclave lining the block between Canal and Hester Streets.
But 13 Essex Street won’t stay dormant for long. A likeminded snack shop is poised to open in the coming weeks. Factory Tamal – a small business specializing in tamales – has already taken over the lease.
